Difference between a long-throw flashlight and a flood flashlight

What is a long throw flashlight?

In the flashlight context, the “beam throw” is the distance the light reaches when you’re focusing on something. However, the light that is generated won’t “spread out” or “flood” as the light will try to pinpoint and focus on a particular thing. 

This works because the surface that is like a mirror behind the LED of a flashlight gathers the light from the LED and throws it; it spreads it in a tight pattern resulting to the beam reaching its farthest point, but not spreading the light. 

That being said, a long throw flashlight is a type of beam pattern that shoots far; but the light doesn’t spread out when it hits a surface. 

Flood beam

Based on how we discussed a long-throw flashlight, then you must have already figured the flood beam out. The flood beam is the type of light that refers to the width of the angle. The flood beam is the opposite of the long throw beam pattern; it does not shoot that far but when it hits the surface, the light is spread out. 

You can think of the long throw flashlight to be the type of flashlight which refers to the “distance,” while the flood beam being the “width.” 

How would you know if the flashlight is a long throw?

Body design

The design of long-throw flashlights is mostly longer, so that it creeps up the space, forcing the reflectors to shoot light farther. Its head, in particular, would need to be longer because of the reflector being deep. This brings us to the second thing you need to look at which would be the reflector. 


A long throw flashlight’s reflector can be found deeply embedded inside it. The deeper the reflector is, the farther the LED will be able to throw the light. In addition to that, the surface of the reflector or the reflector itself shall be smooth. 

Smoother reflectors will help in narrowing the beams out more. This will allow the LED to throw the light further away. Again, of course, it won’t spread it at the end. 

Why do you need a long throw flashlight?

Because of its special feature, a thrower or a long throw flashlight will most definitely be useful under certain circumstances. For instance, if you are part of a search and rescue team, having a thrower readily available would be required. With its capability of throwing a light beam for hundreds of yards away, it’ll be a useful tool in identifying far off objects even when it’s dark. 

A thrower can also be utilized for emergency signaling. Let’s say that a flash flood is happening and you’re asking for help from any civilian or law enforcement you’re seeing. By using a thrower, you’ll eventually get their attention even if they’re about 500 yards away. 

So basically, having a long throw flashlight is useful in some occasions especially if your profession is of the like.
